Top Things to Consider When Getting New Custom Bathroom Cabinets

The Cabinet Material

Because bathroom cabinets are in an environment that is often wet and humid, the materials need to be durable. Certain materials, like laminate and Thermofoil (a finish that is applied to engineered wood), will withstand the conditions of a bathroom. Wood will also hold up well, but if you choose wood, it needs to be properly finished and maintained to ensure longevity.

The Layout & Plumbing

If you’re renovating the entire bathroom, including updating the layout, it could mean that the plumbing also needs to be adjusted. However, changing the location of the plumbing can be expensive. Typically, a floor-mounted vanity will work well with the existing layout. If you choose a wall-mounted vanity, it may require moving the plumbing hookups.

In addition to the layout of the plumbing, there’s also the layout of your new cabinets themselves. Just like kitchen cabinets, the arrangement of the cabinets can impact how you use the space. Do you want a galley layout with vanities on either side of the bathroom? Or a single row of cabinets? Where are the sinks in relation to the shower/tub and toilet? The cabinet designers at Mulberry Millworks can help you work through these decisions to create a space that fits your needs.

The Style

A significant factor in the overall design of the bathroom is the style of the cabinets. You may want to match the bathroom cabinets with those throughout the rest of the home, or you may want cabinets that are unique to that space. Is the bathroom a more traditional design? Contemporary? Do you want a pedestal sink or a larger vanity? What type of cabinet panel: raised, flat, or slab? In today’s master bathrooms, it’s becoming standard to have two sinks, but you may only need or want one, depending on your budget and the size of the bathroom.

Tie Everything Together

Even though the cabinets are a significant part of the bathroom, for a cohesive design, they need to work well with other important elements, such as the countertop, floor tile, shower tile, and wall color. Putting all of these elements together to create a design that you love can be overwhelming, but the team at Mulberry Millworks will be happy to help. For starters, consider whether you want a lot of contrast in the space or a more even tone. Do you want to build the design around a single color or add in accent colors?
